Jenson Button - Brawn GP

It’s been a cracker of a day. The sun was shining and I spent the day cruising around Port Phillip Bay on a yacht listening to the high pitched whine coming from the Albert Park area, contemplating the fun I will have tomorrow, when I attend in person.

My hopes were high for defending Champion Lewis Hamilton this season. There was a part of me that assumed all this talk about MacLaren lacking pace was no more then clever mind games. Yesterday’s practice worried me a little, but then Kovalainen did ok, so I assumed that once MacLaren ironed out the kinks, Lewis would be on Pole for tomorrow.

Oh Dear.

The Good News. There will be, at least, be a Pom on pole for the Australian Grand Prix. It’s a bit of a miracle story surrounding Brawn GP, and I think they fully deserve their success so far, particularly Button, who was conveniently forgotten about when Hamilton came along. It would be great if he could go and win this. I’ve always recognised the quality of the lad, but as the years drew on, his career never reached the heights we were told it would. Button himself was always telling us how good he’d be one day, if it wasn’t for the car. Or the weather. Or a puncture. Or something. But nothing materialised. And we lost faith.

Shame on us. Still. It’s going to be a great race tomorrow, and I will be fully behind Jenson as he bids to win only his second GP.

On another note, I must express my slight disappointment with Hamilton. He’s already given his excuses as to why he might not reclaim his title. Not a great attitude to take into the first race. But, an attitude we’ve come to expect from British Sport. Lets hope that, if he does come in 20th, he doesn’t continue to remind us how “MacLaren will struggle” and “we won’t win it this year”. We’re not interested. Get your head down, and try to get it right for the next race.
