Welcome to the Commentary Box. The Commentary Box is a blog on all things sporty. Written by two mad keen sports fans who have spent many an hour in the pub discussing whether tomorrow’s predicted weather conditions will warrant the selection of a second spinner or whether the English back line have an iota of creativity among them. In fact there wasn’t mush that went on in sport that these two arm chair titans didn’t discuss over a pint or the email ether.
It was during one of these ‘We-can-do-a-better-job-than-that-coach’ discussions that the idea of the Commentary Box was spawned. Here you will find our general musings, opinions and experiences of all things sport related. Some of these opinions you will find amusing, some you will bitterly disagree with and some you will find generally unsuitable for consumption. Please feel free to comment and correct us on any matter you think you might know more about.
A little about the authors:
Phil Thomas
Phil is a web developer by trade and is currently masquerading as an Australian in Melbourne (he would like to make clear, however, that he is still quintessentially British). His interest in sport is vast but amateurish, although what he lacks in ability, he makes up for in enthusiasm. Winter months see him hurtling up and down a lacrosse pitch beating men with a stick, while summer gives way to willow and leather on the cricket pitch. He is the founder of Wobblescrot Wanderers Cricket Club; an invitation only, course cricket team based out of Bristol UK. Any other spare time he has, he spends runching along singletrack on his mountain bike or spending his hard earned dollars on the ski slopes.
Although Phil admits he was once handy on the rugby pitch (used to be a flying winger don’t you know), real ale and working life have destroyed any notion of returning to the sport, and now he makes do with passing judgement from the comfort of his arm chair. His real passion however, lies with Manchester City Football Club, of which he has been a fan since he was a nipper. Phil also has an exceptional record in Football Manager, leading various sides (from Real Madrid to Bath City) to League and Cup doubles, and world domination. Sadly though, this has no basis in real life, other then developing an encyclopedic knowledge of little known football players.
Tom Craven
Tom is the Commentary Box’s Football Correspondent and will be writing a weekely column on the goings on in the ever changing world of football. He is a fan of a permanently struggling Premiership team so spends his whole life going through fixtures to see where the necesary 40 point target will be accumulated. Due to the constant spectre of relegation I feel a duty to also keep abreast of the goings on in the Championship and lower leagues as you never know when they will become my weekly football fix.
Outside of football (ie between June and August in non World Cup and European Chamionship years) I enjoy cricket and walking to super pubs.
